Movie:Beijing Bicycle

BY: GRACE

Hey everyone. Now I’d like to introduce a classic Chinese movie to you.

The movie is called Beijing Bicycle that directed by XiaoshuaiWang. It got an award in Berlin Film Festival in 2001. The story is about two boys’ struggle of growing up in the gap between ideal and reality. It shows the growth of Chinese younger in 1990s. The two boys with different family background are connected by a bicycle. The simple plot still attracts people, because the director is good at catching your hearts by details. However, it is better to explore by yourselves, so I don’t want to reveal more plots. Here I will talk about the bright points I discover in the movie.

In the movie, the basic mood is simple in order to give us natural feeling. And actors try to express by actions instead of by language. It is hard for us to find out decorations of their performance. For example, I will talk about a special action in the film—roar. When Jian and his friends fight Guei for robbing the bicycle, he says nothing but just catches the bicycle and roars for a long time. This action shocks the robbers and audience. People usually roar to relieve bad emotion when be troubled with depression. Guei shows his resistance to the unfair society by roaring. Actually, sometimes passing ideas by action is more directly than other ways.

In addition, I think another bright point is the sets. According to the title of the film, the story is happened in Beijing. In order to impress the background of the story, the director takes many measures, such as putting many scenes in lane, where is the symbolic structure of old Beijing. When you see a group of boys with their innocent and impulsive youth flashing in winding lanes by bicycles, or you find Jian walking along the roof after be bothered by his sister. You may easily feel the breath of Beijing in 1990s. And also, that old Beijing accent sounds quite comfortable.

Every time and every country has it own characters. Beijing Bicycle is a mile-stone like work, as The Graduate, the typical symbol of younger in 1960s’ American. If you want to know more about the youth of Chinese boy in 1990s, this movie is your best choice. The film is surely for general audience. It is just a literary film, and a few fighting scenes are blurred by the director with distant view or other ways.

That’s it. Enjoy it.

  1. A good movie introduction! We all grow up in 1990s, although I haven’t seen this film, I believe it will recollect us a lot of memory in our childhood. What’s more, the background is Chinese capital, an ancient city with many stories, so it will be a good choice for you to know more about China and Chinese youths.
